Running short of yarn halfway through a colour area is frustrating. Buying far too much is not useful either. A workable estimate starts with the size of the rug, then changes with pile height, density and the number of colours.
Start with the size
For a dense, low-pile 30 × 30cm piece, allow roughly 200 to 225g of yarn. A 40 × 40cm cut-pile piece may use around 350g. Treat these as planning estimates rather than guarantees, since two rugs of the same size can use different amounts.
Four things change the total
Pile height
A taller pile uses more yarn than a shorter pile over the same area.
Density
Closely packed rows create a fuller surface and use more yarn. Wider spacing uses less, but can leave the cloth visible.
Cut pile or loop pile
Cut pile and loop pile feed and finish differently. Your actual use will also depend on how you move the gun and how densely you fill each section.
Colour changes
A multi-colour design can require several cones even when the total weight is modest. Each colour needs enough yarn for its own sections, plus a little allowance for threading and testing.
Planning with Nice Studio yarn
Nice Studio cotton-blend tufting yarn is approximately 400g and 420m per cone. One cone may be close to the total needed for a simple 40 × 40cm project, but that does not mean one cone covers a design split across several colours.
Use the drawing to estimate the share of each colour. A large background needs more than a small outline or accent.
Make a colour plan
- Measure the finished design area, not the outside of the frame.
- Mark each colour section on the drawing.
- Estimate what share of the design each colour occupies.
- Adjust for a tall pile or very dense rows.
- Keep a small allowance for testing and uneven use.
Write the estimate beside the drawing before ordering. This makes it easier to see whether one colour covers most of the rug or only a small accent.
