How Much Yarn Do You Need for a Tufted Rug? A Beginner’s Guide

One of the most common questions when planning a first tufting project is simple: how much yarn do I actually need?

There is no single number that works for every rug. Yarn use changes with the size of your design, pile height, tufting density, pile type and how many colours you use. The good news is that you can still make a sensible estimate before you start.

Start with the tufted area

Measure the part of your design that will actually be filled with yarn, rather than the full piece of backing cloth. A small design with lots of empty background will use less yarn than a fully filled rectangle of the same outer dimensions.

For context, published tufting guides commonly estimate roughly 200–225g for a densely tufted 30×30cm low-pile project, while a 40×40cm cut-pile project can be around 350g. These are planning estimates rather than guarantees, because your technique and design can change the result.

What makes a rug use more yarn?

Pile height: Taller pile needs more yarn for every tuft.

Density: Closely packed rows create a denser surface but use more yarn than widely spaced lines.

Cut vs loop pile: The two structures do not use yarn in exactly the same way, and cut-pile projects can also lose some material during trimming and carving.

Colour changes: A multi-colour design can leave small amounts of unused yarn in several colours. If one shade is essential to the design, having a little extra is much easier than trying to match it later.

What does that mean for Nice Studio yarn?

Our cotton-blend tufting yarn comes in approximately 400g / 420m cones. For a small low-pile project, one cone may contain enough yarn in total, but that does not necessarily mean one cone is all you need to buy: a design using four colours still needs access to each of those four colours.

Think about total yarn and colour allocation separately. A 40×40cm design might use roughly a cone’s worth of yarn overall, while the amount required in each shade depends entirely on the artwork.

A simple way to plan before ordering

1. Measure the approximate tufted width and height.
2. Look at how much of that area is actually filled.
3. Decide whether you are creating a standard low-pile piece or something taller and denser.
4. Estimate the percentage of the design used by each colour.
5. Allow some extra for practice lines, colour changes, mistakes and trimming.

If you are making your first piece, keeping the design relatively simple also makes yarn planning much easier. Large solid areas and a small colour palette are easier to estimate than a highly detailed design with many small colour changes.
